We’re Not Just Decluttering, We’re Becoming
When I look around my new home today, I see more than fresh paint, beautiful spaces, or carefully chosen furniture.
I see evidence of becoming.
Not because everything is perfect.
Because every room reflects one honest decision after another.
That wasn't always true.
Years ago, I was in the middle of my master's program studying international business, culinary arts, and French.
Then something unexpected happened.
Halfway through, I had what I can only describe as an epiphany.
I said it out loud so I could awaken myself to my truth.
"Why am I trying to reinvent myself?"
For more than twenty years, I had already been helping people love their homes.
That realization, my truth changed everything.
I shifted the direction of my studies, and my thesis became Recovering Your Authentic-Self: Using Life Coaching Principles and Home as Your Medium.
Years later, it became the foundation for my book, Compassionate Decluttering™.
At the time, I couldn't have imagined where that decision would lead.
I only knew it felt true.
Life didn't suddenly become easier after that.
Like so many women, I continued growing through seasons that stretched me, humbled me, and asked more of me than I thought I had to give.
Along the way, I sought out teachers, healers, coaches, and people who helped me remember who I was whenever I lost sight of myself.
Little by little, I learned to trust my own voice.
One decision at a time.
One season at a time.
One layer at a time.
Today, my home reflects that story.
Not because it's finished.
Because I am different.
That's what compassionate decluttering has always been about for me.
Yes, we clear the clutter.
Yes, we let go of what no longer serves us.
But underneath all of that, something much deeper is happening.
We're becoming.
I watch it happen with the midlife women I coach.
As the emotional clutter begins to lift, they don't just reclaim a room.
They begin reclaiming themselves.
They speak up more easily.
They trust their decisions.
They stop apologizing for what they need.
They begin creating homes that support the woman they are today, instead of the woman they were years ago.
One room at a time.
One conversation at a time.
One brave and sometimes wobbly, decision at a time.
Their homes change because she is changing.
That's the work that has always mattered most to me.
If you're just beginning to wonder whether your clutter might be connected to something deeper, my quiz is a gentle place to start. Sometimes all we need is a mirror that helps us put words to what we've been feeling. You can find it here.
